Using the four-stroke principle in the engine the crankshaft is constantly braked and accelerated again – there is a rotational irregularity. The lower the number of cylinders and the idle speed, the stronger the resulting vibrations are stronger. Increased loads in the auxiliary drive and strong natural oscillations of the crankshaft are the result.
Crankshaft vibration dampers in different design variants reduce the oscillation and make for a smooth and quiet running engine. Simple crankshaft vibration dampers consist of two separate discs with an intermediate damping element. The outer disc is coordinated exactly to the geometry of the crankshaft and prevents the crankshaft breaking as a vibration damper.
Pulley decouplers are also equipped with an additional damping element with which the auxiliary drive of the crankshaft is decoupled. Initially, the vibrations of the crankshaft are not introduced into the auxiliary drive at all and all auxiliary drive components are relieved significantly.
Schaeffler is the only provider that also offers a new crankshaft decoupler with highly durable arc springs for certain applications in addition to conventional damping systems.
